Virus Replication and Infection

Cell Membrane Outside boundary of a cell that serves as a barrier, through which the cell exchanges ions and molecules
Vacuole Membrane-enclosed structure within the cytoplasm of a cell
Lysogenic Cyle of Replication viruses “trick” the host cell into incorporating the virus’s DNA into the host cell’s chromosomes so that every time the host cell reproduces, the new cells contain a copy of the viral DNA
Prophage Virual DNA attached to a bacterial chromosome, also known as a provirus
Incubation Period the time between infection and the appearance of the first symptoms of illness
Lytic Cycle Reproductive cycle of viruses in which the virus invades the host cell and causes it to produce new viruses and eventually burst letting go newly created viruses
Lytic Phase the period of the lysogenic cycle when the virus attacks the host cells and the organism displays symptoms of disease
Reverse Transcriptase an enzyme that transcribes RNA into DNA in retroviruses
