Lesson 52
Virus Replication and Infection
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Cell Membrane | Outside boundary of a cell that serves as a barrier, through which the cell exchanges ions and molecules |
| Vacuole | Membrane-enclosed structure within the cytoplasm of a cell |
| Lysogenic Cyle of Replication | viruses “trick” the host cell into incorporating the virus’s DNA into the host cell’s chromosomes so that every time the host cell reproduces, the new cells contain a copy of the viral DNA |
| Prophage | Virual DNA attached to a bacterial chromosome, also known as a provirus |
| Incubation Period | the time between infection and the appearance of the first symptoms of illness |
| Lytic Cycle | Reproductive cycle of viruses in which the virus invades the host cell and causes it to produce new viruses and eventually burst letting go newly created viruses |
| Lytic Phase | the period of the lysogenic cycle when the virus attacks the host cells and the organism displays symptoms of disease |
| Reverse Transcriptase | an enzyme that transcribes RNA into DNA in retroviruses |
