Part 2 of 2. Interaction between organisms, their environment & other organisms.

TermDefinition
AUTOTROPHS Producers make their own food; Capture the sun's energy, turning it into carbohydrates through photosynthesis
HETROTROPHS Consumers unable to make their own food; Need to consume others or their waste for energy
HERBIVORES Eat plants
DECOMPOSERS Break down of organisms and wastes into organic molecules. The organic molecules become part of the soil used by plants. (i.e., worms, bacteria & fungi)
CARNIVORES Eat other animals
SCAVENGERS An organism feeds habitually on refuse. (i.e., Crows, Vultures)
OMNIVORES Eats both plants and animals
FOOD CHAIN Shows which animals eat other animals or plants. Traces flow of energy and nutrients through single ecosystem from one organism to another.
FOOD WEB Complex pathway of interconnected food chains in an ecosystem
