Plant vocabulary- Part II

TermDefinition
Photosynthesis The process by which plants use sunlight, carbon dioxide and water to make food
Cellular Respiration The process by which cells use oxygen to produce energy from food
Epidermis The surface layer or outer layer of cells on a plant
Guard cell Regulate the opening and closing of the stoma
Fibrous root A root that has many tiny branches
Tap root One large main root
Xylem Tissue in vascular plants that provides support and conducts water and nutrients from the roots
Phloem The tissue that conducts food in vascular plants
Herbaceous stem A stem that is soft, green and flexible
Woody stem A stem that contains wood and is hard and rigid
Stomata/stoma Opening in a leaf that enable gas to enter and leave and water to leave
Cuticle A waxy coating on leaves that help hold water in the leaf
Cambium The growth tissue of a plant
Transpiration Process for regulating water loss through the leaves of a plant
Dormant The inactive state of a seed when conditions are unfavorable to grow
Tropism Growth of all or part of an organism in response to an external stimulus
