Plant vocabulary- Part I

TermDefinition
Chlorophyll A green pigment that captures light energy for photosynthesis
Nonvascular plant Plants that lack specialized conducting tissues and true roots, stems and leaves
Vascular plant Plants that have specialized tissues that conduct material from one part of the plant to another
Gymnosperm A woody, vascular seed plant whose seeds are not enclosed by an ovary, fruit or flower
Angiosperm A flowering plant that produces seeds within a fruit or flower
Rhizoid A rootlike structure in nonvascular plants that holds the plants in place and helps plants get water and nutrients
Rhizome A horizontal, underground stem that produces new leaves, shoots, and roots
Pollination Transfer of pollen from the male part to the female part of the flower
Pollen The tiny granules that contain the male sex cell of seed plants
Sepal Leaflike structure enclosing a flower when it is still a bud
Petal Colorful leaf like structures that surround the male and female reproductive organs in a flower
Stamen Male reproductive organ of a flower
Pistil Female reproductive structure of a flower
Ovary Hollow structure that contains the egg cells and ovule of a flower. The swollen area of the pistil
