Prenatal Care

TermDefinition
Obstetrician Doctor who specializes in providing medical care for pregnant women and delivering babies.
Anemia A condition caused by an iron deficiency.
Mid-wife A nurse practitioner who has extensive training and experience delivering babies and providing pre-natal care.
Folic Acid A vitamin that is important for forming the baby's neural tube.
HCG( Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) Hormone produced in pregnant women.
Trimester A period of about 3 months.
Toxemia A condition that affects a woman's kidneys, heart, or blood during pregnancy.
Miscarriage Refers to the natural ending of a pregnancy.
Amniotic fluid Regulates the baby's temperature, cushions the baby against possible injury, and allows the baby to mover around easily;
Umbilical cord A flexible cord that contains blood vessels and connects the baby to the placenta.
