U2 KA 1 Cells Tissues Organs

Cell basic unit of life
Tissue groups of cells working together to carry out a function e.g muscle tissue
Organ tissues working together to carry out a function e.g. the heart
System groups of organs that work together to carry out a function e.g. reproductive system
Specialisation cells which have been altered to carry out specific jobs e.g. red blood cells carry oxygen
Stem cell an undifferentiated cell that can divide to produce more cells, those cells can be specialised into other cells. Used in growth and repair.
Embryonic stem cell stem cell extracted from embryos. These can develop into any type of cell.
Adult stem cell stem cell extracted from adult tissue. These can develop into a smaller sub-set of cells.
Mitosis cell division that produces clone cells
Differentiate the process of changing a cell into a specialised cell
Where are stem cells harvested (taken) from? From very early stage embryos or from body tissues throughout life.
What is self-renewal? When stem cells make copies of themselves.
