Community/ Population Structure

QuestionAnswer
Ecotones Boundaries within a community that limit the movement of species to other regions
Closed Community community in which the species are limited by established boundaries
Open Community community without boundaries and where species are fairly evenly distributed throughout the region
Stability ability to remain unchanged over time
Species Diversity number of different species in a particular area
Latitudinal Diversity Gradient species diversity decreases as you move further from the equator
Depth Diversity Gradient species diversity increases as you move into the greater depths of marine environments until you reach the point where nutrients are in short supply
Geographic Range total area where a population exists
Outlaying Zones areas with less favorable conditions for a population and where population density decreases
Ecological Time measure for events that take place over decades
Geological Time measure for events that take place over thousands or even millions of years
Monoculture the cultivation or the growth of a single species
Genetic Drift the random change in allele frequencies in small populations, which results in a population with distinct characteristics
