Lesson 44
Community/ Population Structure
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Ecotones | Boundaries within a community that limit the movement of species to other regions |
| Closed Community | community in which the species are limited by established boundaries |
| Open Community | community without boundaries and where species are fairly evenly distributed throughout the region |
| Stability | ability to remain unchanged over time |
| Species Diversity | number of different species in a particular area |
| Latitudinal Diversity Gradient | species diversity decreases as you move further from the equator |
| Depth Diversity Gradient | species diversity increases as you move into the greater depths of marine environments until you reach the point where nutrients are in short supply |
| Geographic Range | total area where a population exists |
| Outlaying Zones | areas with less favorable conditions for a population and where population density decreases |
| Ecological Time | measure for events that take place over decades |
| Geological Time | measure for events that take place over thousands or even millions of years |
| Monoculture | the cultivation or the growth of a single species |
| Genetic Drift | the random change in allele frequencies in small populations, which results in a population with distinct characteristics |
