Lesson 43
Ecological Pyramids
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| First Law of Thermodynamics | Energy is neither created or destroyed, but instead changes from one form to another |
| Second Law of Thermodynamics | When energy is transformed from one form to another, some usable energy is lost as heat |
| Net Primary Productivity | food stored in the form of starch in producers (plants) |
| Ten Percent Rule | about 10 percent of energy is lost at each level of the energy pyramid |
| Energy Pyramid | representative figure showing the decreasing numbers of organisms that fit into the categories from producers to final consumers |
| Decomposers | organisms that break down organic matter to create inorganic matter, they recycle nutrients |
| Pyramid of Biomass | graphic illustrating the total dry weight of the species at each level of the energy pyramid |
| Biomass | the total dry weight of all living organisms within a designated area |
| Pyramid of Numbers | graphic illustrating the number of organisms at each level of the energy pyramid |
