| Term | Definition |

| Gregor Mendel | The monk who studied pea plants and researched heredity and genetic traits |
| Heredity | The passing of inherited characteristics from the generations to generations |
| DNA | The chemical code inside each cell that determines a persons traits A-T C-Gin t |
| Dominant trait | A genetic trait that appears in the first generation and covers up the recessive |
| Recessive | A weaker , covered up by a dominant trait generation. It shows up in the 2nd grand child or later generation |
| Gene | One set of instructions of an inherited trait on the chromosones |
| Alleles | A different form of the same gene, (ex, hair color) that controls an inherited trait |
| Genotype | The genes and inherited instructions for organisms. Not all can be seen |
| Phenotype | The physical inherited characteristics that can be seen in a organism, such as hair, eye and skin color |
| Punnet Square | A chart that can predict all possible combinations of offspring from particular parents |
| Pedigree chart | A diagram used to trace inherited traits through many generations of family |
| Homozygous traits | Inheriting 2 of the same genes for a genetic trait |
| Heterozygous | Inheriting 2 different genes for a genetic trait |
