| Term | Definition |

| Gregor Mendel | The monk who studied pea plants and researched heredity and genetic traits |
| Heredity | The passing of inherited characteristics from generation to generation |
| DNA | The chemical code inside each cell that determines a persons traits A-T, C-G |
| Dominant Trait | A genetic trait that appears in the first generation (child) and covers up the recessive trait |
| Recessive Trait | A weaker trait, covered up by a dominant trait in the first generation. It shows up in the (grandchild) or later generation. |
| Gene | One set of instructions for an inherited trait on the chromosomes |
| Alleles | A different form of the same gene, (ex. hair color) that controls an inherited trait |
