Marine Biomes and Estuaries

Euphotic zone the portion of the ocean into which light can penetrate fully
Intertidal zone shallow shoreline that constantly changes with the tides

Neritic sub-zone shallowest pelagic sub-zone--sunlight penetrates completely
Epipelagic sub-zone brightly lit second pelagic sub-zone that contains significant photosynthetic algae
Mesopelagic sub-zone sub-zone- darker third pelagic sub-zone, contains many of the carnivorous ocean life and also animals that have special adaptive features to exist in dark conditions
Bathypelagic sub-zone deepest pelagic sub-zone, complete darkness
Benthic zone ocean floor, contains continental shelf and continental slope
Continental shelf extension of the land mass into the ocean, located in the benthic zone
Continental slope sharp drop-off from the continental shelf into the deeper areas of the ocean, located in the benthic zone
Abyssal zone ocean floor in the deepest sections of the ocean, contains rifts and hydrothermal vents
Rifts cracks in the ocean floor, formed by shifting tectonic plates
Coral reef contains the exoskeletons of coral and algae, they appear in warm shallow waters, especially in the areas around land masses
Estuaries bays where a river flows into a marine body
