| Diffusion | the movement of something from an area of high concentration to an are of low concentration |
| Osmosis | the movement of a liquid through a semipermeable membrane |
| Passive Transport | when cells don't have to use energy to pass materials in and out of the cell |
| Active Transport | when cells have to use energy to pass materials in and out of the cell |
| Endocytosis | when a cell surrounds a large particle with a pseudopod (fake foot) and uses energy to take it into the cell |
| Exocytosis | when a cell surrounds a particle in a vacuole and uses energy to push it out of the cell |
| Photosynthesis | when a plant cell uses water, sunlight, and carbon dioxide to create glucose and energy |
| Cellular Respiration | when an animal cell uses oxygen to process food into glucose and energy |
| Fermentaiton | a backup system for cells to make energy when the cells don't have enough oxygen; they use carbon dioxide |
