Biology Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Diffusion the movement of something from an area of high concentration to an are of low concentration
Osmosis the movement of a liquid through a semipermeable membrane
Passive Transport when cells don't have to use energy to pass materials in and out of the cell
Active Transport when cells have to use energy to pass materials in and out of the cell
Endocytosis when a cell surrounds a large particle with a pseudopod (fake foot) and uses energy to take it into the cell
Exocytosis when a cell surrounds a particle in a vacuole and uses energy to push it out of the cell
Photosynthesis when a plant cell uses water, sunlight, and carbon dioxide to create glucose and energy
Cellular Respiration when an animal cell uses oxygen to process food into glucose and energy
Fermentaiton a backup system for cells to make energy when the cells don't have enough oxygen; they use carbon dioxide
