TermDefinition
Synapsis The pairing of homologous chromosomes, which does not occur in mitosis
Tetrad Each pair of homologous is called Crossing-Over: Portions of chromatids may break off and attach to adjacent chromatids on the homologous chromosomes
Genetic Recombination results of a new mixture of genetic material
Independent Assortment The random separation of the homologous chromosomes; results in genetic variation
Spermatogenesis The production of sperm cells
Oogenesis Production of mature egg cells
Polar Bodies The other three products of meiosis; eventually will degenerate
Sexual Reproduction Production of offspring through meiosis and the union of the sperm and egg cells
Crossing-Over Portions of chromatids may break off and attach to adjacent chromatids on the homologous chromosomes
