Cell Structure

Cells The basic unit of structure and function in living things.
Cell Wall Protects and supports the cell.
Cell Membrane Controls what enters and leaves the cell.
Nucleus The control center of the cell.
Mitochondria Convert energy from food molecules to energy the cell can use.
Endoplasmic Reticulum Carries proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to another.
Ribosomes Produce proteins inside cells.
Golgi Bodies Organelles that package and deliver proteins.
Vacuoles Store food and other materials needed by the cell.
Lysosomes Contains chemicals that break down food particles and old cell parts.
Chloroplasts Organelles that use energy from sunlight to produce food.
Resolution Refers to how sharp an image is.
Element A substance that cannot be broken down into a simpler substance.
Compound Two or more elements chemically combined.
Enzymes Catalyst that speeds up chemical reactions.
Diffusion Movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
Osmosis Diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane.
Passive Transport Refers to the movement of materials through the cell membrane without using the cells energy.
Active Transport Refers to the movement of materials through the cell membrane when the cells energy is required.
