Ecology terms and definitions for Junior Certificate level

TermDefinition
Carnivore Animal that only eats other animals and does not eat plants
Herbivore Animal that only eats plants
Consumers Animals that get their food by eating plants or other animals
Producers Plants that make their own food
Habitat The area where a plant of animal lives
Ecosystems All the plants and animals in a specific area interacting with each other and their environment
Ecology The study of the relationships between plants, animals and their environment.
Omnivore Animals that eat BOTH plants and animals
Decomposers Organisms that feed on dead plants and animals
Competition Takes place when two or more organisms both require a resource that is in short supply
Food web Two or more interconnecting food chains
Interdependence Living things depending on each other for survival
