aorta The largest artery in the body.
artery A blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart.
atherosclerosis A condition in which the artery wall thickens as a result of the buildup of fatty materials.
atrium Each of the two upper chambers of the heart that receives blood coming into the heart.
blood pressure The pressure that is exerted by the blood against the walls of the blood vessels.
capillary A tiny blood vessel where substances are exchanged between the blood and the body cells.
cardiovascular system A body system that consists of heart, blood vessels and blood, and that carries needed substances to cells and carries waste products away from cells.
cholesterol A waxy fatlike substance found only in animal products, that can build up on the artery walls.
fibrin A chemical that is important in blood clotting because it forms a fiber net that traps red blood cells, causing a scab to form.
heart A hollow, muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body.
heart attack A condition in which blood flow to a part of the heart muscle is blocked, which causes heart cells to die.
hemoglobin An iron containing protein that binds oxygen molecules to red blood cells and makes up most of the red blood cell.
hypertension A disorder in which a person's blood pressure is consistently higher than normal.
pacemaker A group of cells located in the right atrium that sends signals that makes the heart contract and it regulates the heartbeat.
plasma The liquid part of blood that is 90% water.
platelet A cell fragment that plays an important part in blood clotting.
red blood cell A cell in the blood that takes up oxygen in the lungs and delivers it to cells in the body.
sphygmomometer An instrument that measures blood pressure.
ventricle Each of the two lower chambers of the heart that pump blood out of the heart.
white blood cells A blood cell that fights disease.
