What does an arrow show in a food web or chain? The direction of ENERGY FLOW.
What is a producer. A GREEN plant that can make its own food by photosynthesis.
What is a consumer? An organism that gets its energy by eating another organism.
State two ways energy is lost from a food chain. Any 2 from Heat, movement, indigestible parts
What is a herbivore? An organism that only eats plants
What is a species? Organisms that can reproduce and produce fertile off-spring
What is a Carnivore? An organism that only eats animals.
What happens to the Energy in a food chain as you go along the food chain? It gets smaller
Which ecological Pyramid ALWAYS takes the shape of a pyramid? Energy
What is meant by a pyramid of Numbers? A diagram that represent the Number of organisms at each successive level of a food chain.
What is meant by a pyramid of Energy? A diagram that represent the Energy of organisms at each successive level of a food chain.
What percentage of energy is passed on at each stage in a food chain? 10%
What happens to the energy that is passed on in a food chain? It is turned into body tissue
How much energy is LOST at each stage in a food chain? 90%
Give an example of a food chain where the Numbers do NOT decrease in size Tree
Why do plants need nitrates? To make amino acids which are used to make protein
What is Inter-specific Competition? Competition between Different Species
What type of competition is the most intense? Intra-specific
What is Intra-specific Competition? Competition WITHIN the species
Why is intra-specific competition more intense? Because they are competing for ALL the same resources.
