| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| ORGANIC COMPOUND | A compound that contains both the elements Hydrogen and Carbon |
| INORGANIC COMPOUND | A compound that dosen't contain both the elements Hydrogen and Carbon |
| SYNTHESIS; DEHYDRATION SYNTHESIS | To make a large molecule from smaller molecules; To combain two or more compounds by removing H20 |
| HYDROLYSIS | To seperate a large compound by adding H20 |
| ENZYMES | A group of protiens. Each kind of enzyme is uniquely shaped to speed up the synthesis or digestion of a particualar substance. The rate that this acours depends on temperature, the concentraion of the enzyme, and pH. |
| HORMONES | Protiens that signal changes in the body |
| CARBOHYDRATES | Sugars that provide instant energy. Most carbohydrates end in -ose. They contain the elements Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen. The ratio of C:H:O=1:2:1. The order of saccharides (a.k.a carbs) from small to big are mono-di-poly. |
| LIPIDS | Made of Glycerol and 3 fatty acids, lipids are really big molecules that have 2 times the energy of carbohydrates. Lipids are used as the basis of the cell membrane, as well as to store energy. The elements contained in lipids are Carbon/Hydrogen/Oxygen. |
| POLYMERS | Compounds made up of two or more compounds. |
| MONOMERS | A single compound. |
| SACCARIDIE | Scientific name for carbohydrates. |
| pH | A scale of the acididy of a substance. Lower pH is very acidic. Higher pH is less acidic. |
| SUBSTRATE | A substance being either broken down or combined with other substances by enzymes. |
| PEPTIDE | A single amino acid compound |
| DIPEPTIDE | Two Peptide compounds |
| FATS | A substance made out of Lipids |
