Prenatal Development
| Term | Definition |

| Amniocentesis | A prenatal test that involves removing a small amount of amniotic fluid that surrounds the fetus in the uterus |
| Amniotic fluid | Fluid that cushions a developing baby from outside pressures. |
| Birth defect | An abnormality that is present at or before birth and results in mental or physical disability. |
| Chronic villi sampling | A prenatal test that involves taking a sample of cells from the placenta. |
| Ectopic pregnancy | Also known as a tubal pregnancy. |
| Embryo | The developing baby that begins with the implantation into the uterine wall. this stage lasts 6 weeks. |
| Fetus | The last stage of development for a developing baby which ends at birth. |
| Placenta | Tissue that is connected to the uterine wall, contains a rich network of blood vessels. |
| Umbilical cord | Cord that connects the developing fetus to the placenta. |
| Ultrasound imaging | A process that uses sound waves to create video and still images of the fetus in the uterus. |
| Zygote | The first stage of prenatal development which lasts 2 weeks. |
