photosynthesis an overview
| Term | definition |
|---|---|
| Light dependent reactions | Reactions in photosynthesis that require light and light absorbing pigments. |
| Light independent reactions | Reactions in photosynthesis in which carbon dioxide and energy carrying molecules are used to produce high energy sugars. |
| NADP+ | Carrier molecule that transports high energy electrons. |
| pigment | Light absorbing molecule. |
| Stroma | Fluid portion of the chloroplast that surrounds the thylakoid membrane. |
| Thylakoid | Photosynthesis membrane sac found inside chloroplasts. |
| ATP synthase | Enzyme that converts ADP and a phosphate group to ATP. |
| Calvin cycle | Another name for the light independent reactions in which carbohydrates are produced. |
| Electron transport chain | Series of electron carrier proteins that transport high energy electrons during the process of making ATP. |
| Photosystem | Cluster of chlorophyll and proteins in the thylakoids essential to the light dependent reactions. |
| Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) | Compound that cells use to store and release energy. |
| Autotroph | A living thing that captures energy from sunlight or chemicals to make its own food. |
| Heterotroph | A living thing that gets its food by consuming other living things. |
| Photosynthesis | Process by which autotrophs use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to produce carbohydrates and oxygen. |
| Chlorophyll | chlorophyll gives plants their green color. |
