photosynthesis an overview

Light dependent reactions Reactions in photosynthesis that require light and light absorbing pigments.
Light independent reactions Reactions in photosynthesis in which carbon dioxide and energy carrying molecules are used to produce high energy sugars.
NADP+ Carrier molecule that transports high energy electrons.
pigment Light absorbing molecule.
Stroma Fluid portion of the chloroplast that surrounds the thylakoid membrane.
Thylakoid Photosynthesis membrane sac found inside chloroplasts.
ATP synthase Enzyme that converts ADP and a phosphate group to ATP.
Calvin cycle Another name for the light independent reactions in which carbohydrates are produced.
Electron transport chain Series of electron carrier proteins that transport high energy electrons during the process of making ATP.
Photosystem Cluster of chlorophyll and proteins in the thylakoids essential to the light dependent reactions.
Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) Compound that cells use to store and release energy.
Autotroph A living thing that captures energy from sunlight or chemicals to make its own food.
Heterotroph A living thing that gets its food by consuming other living things.
Photosynthesis Process by which autotrophs use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to produce carbohydrates and oxygen.
Chlorophyll chlorophyll gives plants their green color.
