what are the 5 qualities that make something living? they have cells, they respond, the use energy, they grow and develop, and they reproduce
what does homeostasis mean? keeping the "home" stable. ex: if a person is cold they will shiver to try and warm up and get back to normal
what are 4 raw materials that all living things need? food, water, shelter, and space to live
what was the old theory of spontaneous generation? that life can come from the nonliving (maggots come from meat left on the counter too long)
what is the theory of biogenesis? life comes from life (ex: baby mice come from parent mice)
what does phylogeny mean? the evolutionary history of an organism
what kind of graph shows the evolutionary history of an organism? cladogram
what does binomal nomenclature mean? it means all living things have 2 parts to their scientific names- genus and species
what are the 2 parts of an organisms scientific name? genus and species
which part of the scientific name is capitalized? only the first letter of the genus- all other letters in the name are lower case
what do you call a key used to identify organisms. it has 2 choices at each step. dichotomous key
