| Island | free standing storage and countertop unit in a kitchen; may include cook top |
| Master bath | full bathroom that is part of the master bedroom |
| Peninsula | kitchen countertop that extends out into a room |
| Vanity | a base cabinet in a bathroom, generally around a sink |
| Work center | an area of a kitchen especially equipped for a particular task |
| Work triangle | the triangle formed by drawing imaginary lines to connect sink, range or cooktop, and refrigerator |
| Telecommuters | people authorized by their employers to work from home using computers, modems, fax machines, and teleconference equipment to handle their work responsibilities |
| Ergonomics | applied science concerned with designing and arranging things so that they are safe, comfortable, and efficient for people to use |
| Open storage | stored items are visible on shelving |
| Closed storage | drawers or doors conceal items within shelving |
| Asbestos | a flameretardant mineral substance |
| Asphyxiation | loss of consciousness or death from lack of oxygen |
| Carbon monoxide | a colorless, odorless gas that is readily absorbed by red blood cells when breathed in, and is toxic to humans |
| Combustible/flammable | capable of burning quickly |
| Radon | a radioactive gas that occurs naturally in some types of soil and rock |
| Thermal burn | an injury caused by hot liquids, hot surfaces, or flames |
| Caulking | applying a sealing compound to make a joint water and air tight |
| Warranty | written statement of manufacturers promise to replace defective parts at no charge for a certain time |
| Defect | any flaw that exists in the product when it is sold or that develops within a certain period of time |
| Damage | a problem that is the result of improper treatment by the buyer or natural disaster |
| Service contract | an agreement purchased from a dealer or a manufacturer under which regular inspections and repairs are made at no extra charge or for a small fee |
| Renovation | the process of extensively repairing and modernizing a home |
| Restoration | a type of renovation in which an older home is returned to its original state |
| Conversion | buying for the purpose of converting it or changing its use |
| Setback | the distance any part of a building must be from the property line |
| Variance | a license to waive the zoning law |
| Home equity loan | money borrowed from a lending institution based on the current market value of the property minus the amount owed on the mortgage |
| Performance bond | sum of money a contractor puts up to provide insurance that a job will be completed within a certain time |
| Bid | an offer from a contractor to complete a project for a certain price |
| Contract | a legally binding agreement by two parties that involves a price |
