The immune System
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Pathogen | diease causing agents and can be found on almost any surface. |
| Lysozyme | small chains of amino acid. Destroys types of bacteria and viruses. |
| non-specific | 1st line of defense: External defense-Physical barriers and chemical barriers 2nd line of defense(innate immunity): Phagocytosis and inflammation |
| Specific | 3rd line of defense: Adaptive immunity: Antibody mediated immunity and Cell mediated immunity |
| Phagocytes | White blood cells that eat invading bacteria (pac man style) macrophages and neutrophils |
| Inflammation | injured cells call for help using a chemical called Histamine. Brings fluid filled with more white blood cells to the area. |
| Fever | Raise in body temperature to denature invading organisms enzymes. |
| Mast cells | Release histamine and other alarm signals. Including cytokines. |
| Macrophages | are likely to be the first nonspecific response to bacteria entering a cut in the skin. |
| lymphocytes | isa cell designed to attack a specific protein. |
| Antigen | A molecule that induces an immune response. Usually foreign. |
| Two Types of Lymphocytes | B cells and T cells |
| B cells | develop in the bone marrow and have a specific protein they will recognize and bind to.Scans body fluid for bacteria or viruses. |
| T Cells | Develop in the thymus gland, circulates blood, specific protein they will recognize and bind to. Attacks cells that have already been invaded by bacteria and viruses. |
