Important Nutrition words to learn

Nutrition Life function by which food is changed into a usable form.
Heterotroph Organism that must obtain and ingest food from the environment.
Chyme Soupy liquid in the stomach
Constipation Digestive tract disorder resulting in hard, dry feces (caca) due to indigestible food remaining too long in the colon.
Esophagus Food tube that transports the food down into the stomach.
Chemical digestion Digestion involving enzymes in the mouth, stomach, &small intestine.
Alimentary canal Digestive tract
Large intestine Organ that stores indigestible food and reabsorbs water and vitamin K.
Diarrhea Condition in which the feces (caca) is runny because the large intestine is not reabsorbing the water from the indigestible food.
Villi Finger-like projections of the small intestine that increase the surface area within the structure for absorption of nutrients.
Salivary glands Structures in the mouth that secretes water (saliva) and amylase.
Ingestion Taking food into the body.
End Products Monomers that are used to build/make carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids. Example; amino acids, simple sugars, & fatty acids & glycerol.
Peristalsis Wavelike muscular contractions of the digestive tract.
Emulsify Breaking down fat globules into fat droplets
Bile Yellowish-green liquid produced by the liver, stored in the gall bladder and emulsify fat.
Digestion Process of breaking down macromolecules into their end products.
Ulcer Erosion in the stomach lining causing pain or discomfort.
Glycogen Polysaccharide that is stored in the liver and muscle tissue.
Bolus Soft mass of food that is easy to swallow.
Nutrients Usuable parts of food.
Calories Units used to measure the energy content of food.
Roughage Cellulose, Indigestible fiber.
