| Term | Definition |

| smooth muscle | found in digestive track and walls of blood vessels |
| cardiac muscle | found only in the heart and pumps blood around the body |
| skeletal muscle | attached to bones for movement; also helps protect internal organs |
| tendons | strands of connective tissues that connect muscle to bones |
| flexor | muscle that bends (ex. biceps) |
| extensor | muscle that straightens (ex. triceps) |
| aerobic exercise | increase endurance; use oxygen |
| strength exercise | uses resistance and weights |
| anaerobic | does NOT require extra oxygen |
| anabolic steroids | can cause long term health problems |
| ligaments | connect bones to bones and hold joints together |
| muscular system | the organ system whose primary function is movement and flexibility |
| voluntary muscles | muscle action under conscious control (skeletal) |
| involuntary muscles | muscle action NOT under conscious control (smooth & cardiac) |
| strain | an injury where a muscle or tendon is overstretched or torn |
| tendonitis | inflamed tendons that can occur when people exercise too much and don't allow enough recovery time to injured tendons |
