Muscular System

muscular

TermDefinition
smooth muscle found in digestive track and walls of blood vessels
cardiac muscle found only in the heart and pumps blood around the body
skeletal muscle attached to bones for movement; also helps protect internal organs
tendons strands of connective tissues that connect muscle to bones
flexor muscle that bends (ex. biceps)
extensor muscle that straightens (ex. triceps)
aerobic exercise increase endurance; use oxygen
strength exercise uses resistance and weights
anaerobic does NOT require extra oxygen
anabolic steroids can cause long term health problems
ligaments connect bones to bones and hold joints together
muscular system the organ system whose primary function is movement and flexibility
voluntary muscles muscle action under conscious control (skeletal)
involuntary muscles muscle action NOT under conscious control (smooth & cardiac)
strain an injury where a muscle or tendon is overstretched or torn
tendonitis inflamed tendons that can occur when people exercise too much and don't allow enough recovery time to injured tendons
