| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| photosynthesis | the conversion of light energy into chemical energy stored in sugars |
| auto troph | an organism that uses energy turn carbs carbon dioxide |
| stomata | small pores on the underside of a leaf that act in gas exchange |
| cloroplasts | a plastid containing chlorophyll; the site of photosynthesis |
| biochemical pathway | a series of chemical reactions in which the product of one reaction is consumed in the next reaction |
| calvin cycle | a biochemical pathway of photosynthesis in which co2 is converted into a carbohydrate (sugar) |
| stroma | in plants, the solution that surrounds the thylakoids in a chloroplast, location of the calvin cycle |
| ATP | molecule acting as the energy source in all cells |
| nad+ and fad | an organic molecule that accepts electrons during reactions (the electron acceptor) |
| light reactions | the first reaction in photosynthesis, the absorption of light by photo systems 1 and 2 |
| granum | a stack of thylakoids in chloroplast |
| photosystem | several hundred chlorophyll molecules where the light energy is absorbed and used to run the light dependent reactions |
| pigment | the name of the type of compounds that absorb wavelengths and reflect others giving off color |
| chlorophyll | the main light absorbing pigment in photosynthesis. Absorbs blue and red lengths and reflects green |
| electron transport chain | protein molecules that transport electrons through the thylakoid membrane. Energy is used to pump protons into thylakoid and turn NAD+ into NADPH |
| chemiosis | process in the chloroplasts in which the movement of protons results in the synthesis of ATP |
| ADP | result when adenosine-triphosphate is broken down and energy is released |
| ATP Synthase | enzyme that catalyzes the synthesis of ATP from ADP and phosphate |
| reactant | a compound involved in a chemical reaction |
| product | a compound formed by a chemical reaction |
| glycosis | pathway where glucose is broken down to pyruvic acid |
| anaerobic respiration | cells make ATP without the use of oxygen |
| aerobic respiration | cells make ATP with the oxygen as the final electron acceptor |
| cellular respiration | cells make ATP by breaking down organic compounds |
| mitochondia | site of aerobic respiration in eukaryotic cells |
| Krebs cycle | second step of cellular respiration that occurs in the mitochondria breaking down sugars to charge electron carriers |
| electron transport chain | molecules that use some of the enrgy of electrons to pump protons across the membrane |
| fermentation | a process in which cells make a limited number of ATP without oxygen |
| lactic acid | the product formed from the fermentation of pyruvic acid |
