Exchange Materials
How do cells exchange materials?
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell Membrane | barrier between inside and outside of the cell |
| Semi-Permeable Membrane | Only certain things can cross through the barrier into and out of a cell |
| Passive Transport | Moves materials into and out of a cell to areas of lower concentration - no energy required |
| Diffusion | the movement of molecules from high concentration to low concentration |
| Diffusion | The stinky smell of a fart slowly crept across the room. |
| Osmosis | the movement of WATER through a membrane from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration. |
| Osmosis | The gummy bear swelled up and then shriveled due to osmosis. |
| Active Transport | USES ENERGY (ATP) to move materials into and out of a cell to areas of higher concentrations. |
| Endocytosis | Process where cells use energy to surround a particle and enclose it in a vesicle and brings it inside the cell. |
| Endocytosis | "cell eating" |
| Exocytosis | Process where cells use energy to inclose particles in a vesicle and release them from the cell. |
| Exocytosis | "cell pooping" |
