| herbivore | Organism that obtains energy by eating only plants |
| chemosynthesis | Process in which chemical energy is used to produce carbohydrates (deep-sea organisms) |
| heterotroph | Organism that obtains food by consuming other living things; also called consumers |
| decomposer | Organism that breaks down and obtains energy from dead organic matter (eg bacteria) |
| primary producers | Organisms that make their own food from photosynthesis or chemosynthesis; also called autotrophs |
| detrivore | Organism that feeds on dead plants and animals. (eg worms) |
| carnivore | Organism that obtains energy by eating animals. |
| Photosynthesis | Process used by plants to use sunlight to gain energy |
| autotrophs | Organism that self-nourishes (feeds); also called a primary producer. |
| omnivore | An organism that eats both plants and animals |
| consumer | Organism that consumes organisms for its energy and food supply: also called a heterotroph. |
| scavenger | Animal that consumes the carcasses of other animals |
