Food Webs

TermDefinition
herbivore Organism that obtains energy by eating only plants
chemosynthesis Process in which chemical energy is used to produce carbohydrates (deep-sea organisms)
heterotroph Organism that obtains food by consuming other living things; also called consumers
decomposer Organism that breaks down and obtains energy from dead organic matter (eg bacteria)
primary producers Organisms that make their own food from photosynthesis or chemosynthesis; also called autotrophs
detrivore Organism that feeds on dead plants and animals. (eg worms)
carnivore Organism that obtains energy by eating animals.
Photosynthesis Process used by plants to use sunlight to gain energy
autotrophs Organism that self-nourishes (feeds); also called a primary producer.
omnivore An organism that eats both plants and animals
consumer Organism that consumes organisms for its energy and food supply: also called a heterotroph.
scavenger Animal that consumes the carcasses of other animals
