Cellular Organelles

Cell Membrane The outer edge of the cell. It controls what goes into the cell and what comes out.
Nucleus The control center of the cell. It contains the DNA.
Chromosomes Coiled structure of DNA and protein in the nucleus.
Nuclear Membrane The outer edge of the nucleus. It controls what goes into the nucleus and what comes out.
Mitochondria The powerhouse of the cell. it provides energy for the cell's activities.
Cytoplasm The jelly-like fluid inside of the cell.
Ribosome Makes proteins using DNA.
Endoplasmic Reticulum Houses the ribosomes and transports proteins.
Golgi Complex Package proteins for use or to be released from the cell. `
Lysosomes Contains enzymes, digest food particles, wastes, cell parts, and invaders.
Vacuole Stores water, nutrients, and wastes.
Cell Wall Stiff covering of plant cells that provides support.
Chloroplast Make food from carbon dioxide and water by using chlorophyll to capture sunlight energy.
Cytoskeleton Internal framework of protein which play an essential role in cell movement, shape, and division.
Vesicle Small sac that contains proteins
Tissue A group of cells working together
Organ A group of tissues working together.
Organ System A group of organs working together.
Organism Something that can live on its own.
Cell Theory A three part idea about cells which states: All living things are made of cells, the cell is the basic unit of life, and all cells come from existing cells.
Organelle One of a cell's parts that are specialized to perform a specific function.
Prokaryote A basic cell that does not have a nucleus.
Eukaryote A complex cell that has a nucleus.
Specialization The process of cells taking on specific functions
Photosynthesis The process of making glucose from carbon dioxide and water in the presence of light energy.
