| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cells | Basic unit of living organisms |
| Compound Light Microscope | Uses a series of lens to magnify objects in steps |
| Cell Theory | Three main ideas: 1. All organisms are composed of one or more cells 2. The cell is the basic unit of structure and organization of organisms 3. All cells come from preexisting cells |
| Electron Microscope | Uses a beam of electrons to magnify an organism 500,000 its original size |
| Organelles | Small specialized structures in a cell |
| Prokaryotes | Cells that do not have membrane bound organelles |
| Eukaryotes | Cells that do have membrane bound organelles |
| Nucleus | Membrane bound organelle that controls cellure functions |
| Plasma membrane | Flexible boundary between the cell and its enviroment |
| Selective permeability | Process in which the membrane allows some molecules in or out of the cell while keeping others out |
| Phospholipid | Gycerol backbone, two fatty acid chains and a phosphate group, forms a bilayer |
| Fluid mosaic model | Model of the plasma membrane |
| Transport proteins | More needed nutrients and unneeded wastes in or out of the cell |
