| pathogen | an organism that causes disease |
| infectious disease | is a disease that is caused by the presence of a living thing within the body |
| toxin | a poison produced by bacterial pathogens that damages cells |
| bacteria | are one-celled organisms that cause a wide variety of diseases including ear infections, food poisoning and strep throat |
| viruses | are tiny particles , much smaller than bacteria and cannot reproduce unless they are inside living cells |
| fungi | they include molds and yeasts and can cause some infectious disease such as athlete's foot and ringworm |
| protists | are also a cause of disease like Malaria which is an infection of the blood that is common in tropical areas |
