| carrying capacity | maximum number of individuals in a species that an environment can support for the long term. |
| density dependent factor | The allee effect describes a situation in which population growth is facilitated by increased population density. |
| density independent factor | Any factor in the environment that does not depend of the number of members in a population per unit area. |
| dispersion | any factor in the environment that depends on the number of members in a population per unit area. |
| emigration | number of individuals moving away. |
| immigration | move of individuals moving into a population. |
| population density | Number of organisms per unit area. |
| population growth rate | Explains how fast a given population grows. |
| age structure | number of males and females in each of three age groups pre-reproductive stage, reproductive stage, and post-reproductive stage. |
| demographic transition | change in a population from high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates. |
| demography | study of human population size, density, distribution, movement, and birth and death rates. |
| zero population growth | occurs when births plus immigration equals deaths plus emigration. |
