Chapter 4 vocabulary

TermDefinition
carrying capacity maximum number of individuals in a species that an environment can support for the long term.
density dependent factor The allee effect describes a situation in which population growth is facilitated by increased population density.
density independent factor Any factor in the environment that does not depend of the number of members in a population per unit area.
dispersion any factor in the environment that depends on the number of members in a population per unit area.
emigration number of individuals moving away.
immigration move of individuals moving into a population.
population density Number of organisms per unit area.
population growth rate Explains how fast a given population grows.
age structure number of males and females in each of three age groups pre-reproductive stage, reproductive stage, and post-reproductive stage.
demographic transition change in a population from high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates.
demography study of human population size, density, distribution, movement, and birth and death rates.
zero population growth occurs when births plus immigration equals deaths plus emigration.
