| Dispersion | another characteristic of a population. |
| Density-Independent Factor | environmental factor, such as storms and extreme heat or cold, that affects populations regardless of their density. |
| Density-Dependent Factor | environmental factor, such as predation, disease, and competition, that depends on the number of members in a population per unit area. |
| Population Growth Rate | How fast a specific population |
| Emigration | is the term ecologists use to describe the number of individuals moving from a population. |
| Immigration | is the term ecologists use to describe the number of individuals moving into a population. |
| Carrying Capacity | the maximum number of individuals in a species that an environment can support for the long term. |
| Demography | study of human populations based on size, density, movement, distribution, and birth and death rates. |
| Demographic Transition | population change from high birth rates and death rates to low birth rates and death rates. |
| Zero Population Growth (ZPG) | occurs when births plus immigration equals deaths plus emigration. |
| Age Structure | the number of males and females in each of three age groups: pre-reproductive stage, reproductive stage, and post-reproductive stage. |
