Cell Basic Units of Life
Compound Light Microscope Uses a series of lenses to magnify objects in steps
Cell Theory Made up of 3 ideas- 1.All organisms are composed of one or more cells. 2.The cell is the basic unit of structure and organization of organisms 3.All cells come from preexisting cells
Electron Microscope Uses a beam of electrons instead of light to magnify structures up to 500,000 times their size
Organelle a small specialized structure in a cell
Prokaryote Cells w/o a Membrane bound organelle
Eukaryote Cells w/ a Membrane bound organelle
Nucleus The central membrane bound organelle that manages cellular functions
Organization The orderly structure of cells in an organelle
Ion An atom with a positive or negative electrical charge
Plasma Membrane The flexible boundary between the cell and its environment
Selective Permeability A process where a membrane allows some molecules to pass through while keeping others out
Phospholipid Two fatty acid chains, a glycerol backbone, and a phosphate group
Fluid Mosaic Model The model of the plasma membrane
Transport Protein move needed substances or waste materials throughout the plasma membrane
