Chapter 7 Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
organization The orderly structure of cells in an organism.
cell The basic units of living organisms.
compound light microscope Use a series of lenses to magnify objects in steps.
cell theory 1.All organisms are composed of one or more cells. 2.The cell is the basic unit of structure and organization of organisms. 3.All cells come from preexisting cells.
electron microscope Uses a beam of electrons instead of light to magnify structures up to 500,000 times their actual size.
organelle Specialized structures belonging to all cells.
prokaryote Unicellular organisms that do not have membrane-bound organelles.
eukaryote Multicellular organisms that do have membrane-bound organelles.
nucleus The central membrane-bound organelle that manages or controls cellular functions.
ion An atom or group of atoms with a positive or negative electrical charge.
plasma membrane The flexible boundary between the cell and its environment.
selective permeability A process in which a membrane allows some molecules to pass through while keeping others out.
phospholipid Have a glycerol backbone, two fatty acid chains, and a phosphate group.
fluid mosaic model The model of the plasma membrane.
transport protein Move needed substances or waste materials through the plasma membrane.
