what is the 1st stage in drug testing? drug are tested on human cells and tissues in the lab
2nd stage? test the drug on live animals. to see whether the drug works, to find out its toxicity (how harmful it is) and the best dosage
3rd stage? tested on human volunteers in a clinical trial
what are the stages in the human volunteer clinical trial? 1. tested on a healthy volunteer-make sure no harmful side effects 2.tested on patients-optimum dose is found (most effective with few side effects) 3. 2 groups-new drug and placebo
what is a placebo? what is it used for? a substance that looks like the drug but isn't. it allows for the placebo effect ( when the patient excepts the treatment to work and feels better even tho the treatment isn't doing anything)
why is the trial double blind? neither the patient or the doctor knows until the results have been gathered. this is so the doctors are subconsciously influenced by their knowledge
