| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| diffusion | the net movement of a substance from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration, also referred to as the movement of a substance down a concentration gradient |
| facilitated diffusion | passive transport of molecules across a biological membrane through proteins |
| isotonic | sport drinks contain similar concentrations of salt and sugar as in the human body |
| hypertonic | sport drinks contain a higher concentration of salt and sugar than the human body |
| hypotonic | sport drinks contain a lower concentration of salt and sugar than the human body |
| osmosis | movement of solvent molecules through a membrane into a region of higher solute concentration, in direction to equalize the solute concentrations on the two sides |
| phospholipid bilayer | hydrophilic phosphate heads point “out” to the water on either side and hydrophobic tails point “in” |
| selective permeability | biological membrane that will allow certain molecules to pass through it by diffusion and "facilitated diffusion" |
