Cell Division
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Mitosis | Process of asexual reproduction of cells |
| Cytokinesis | A moment in time when two new cells separate during cell division |
| Chromosome | A compact section of DNA, found in the nucleus |
| Produce spindle fibers | |
| Chromatid | Thickened strands of copied DNA |
| Spindle Fibers | Produced by the centrioles, attach to the chromosomes at the centromere and pull them apart during anaphase |
| Genes | A specific sequence of DNA that codes a specific trait |
| DNA | deoxyribonucleic acid, found in the nucleus |
| Chromatin | Long, thin strands of DNA that is found in the nucleus during interphase |
| Daughter Cells | The new cells that are formed by cell division |
| Cell Cycle | The complete life cycle of a cell, included interphase, mitosis/meiosis and cytokinesis |
| Interphase | Normal functioning stage of the cell, growth and DNA replication happens at the end of this phase |
| Prophase | First phase of mitosis in which the chromosomes shorten and thicken, nuclear membrane breaks down |
| Metaphase | Second phase of mitosis, chromosomes line up in the center of the cell, spindle fibers attach to the centromere |
| Anaphase | Third phase of mitosis, chromosomes separate and are pulled toward the centrioles |
| Telophase | Fourth phase of mitosis, nuclear membrane reforms, cell membrane pinches inward |
