Cells/Cell Organelles
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is a phospholipid? | It is a lipid containing a phosphate group in its molecules. It is a major part of the cell membrane. |
| What is Passive Transport? | The movement of materials across the cell membrane without the use of energy. |
| What is Active Transport? | Movement of materials against a concentration gradient that requires the use of energy. |
| What is Simple Diffusion? | The process by which molecules of a substance move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. |
| What is Facilitated Diffusion? | The process in which molecules pass through special protein channel because they cannot directly diffuse across a membrane. |
| What is Osmosis? | The (facilitated) diffusion of water selectively permeable membrane. It works by moving water molecules from a high concentration to a low concentration. |
| Isotonic? | Concentration of solutes are the same inside and outside of the cell. |
| Hypotonic ? | The outside of the cell has a lower solute concentration than inside the cell. |
| Hypertonic? | The outside of the cell has a higher solute concentration than inside the cell. |
