Biology Midterm 2

Direct Interactions -Gap Junctions/plasmodesmata -interactions between cell surface material
Local signaling -cells release materials that diffuse -causes a response in nearby cells
Long Distance Signalling -Response in cells distance from the 1st cell -hormones
cells must be able to respond to environemental changes
sometimes these changes are signals from other cells
outside signal must be converted to internal response
first messenger signalling molecule outside of the cell
receptors -molecule on the surface that binds to external molecules -sense changes in the environment -usually span the membrane
Second messenger -molecule w/in cells -cellular factors that bring about the response
Signal Transduction -message must be passed from the membrane into the cell -often a series of steps -phosphorylation cascade
Response -must be a cellular response -results in a change in gene expression in the nucleus -cloud activate (or inactuvate) and enzyme
