Biology

TermDefinition
Atom Smallest basic unit of matter.
Element One particular type of atom and it can't be broken down into a simpler substance.
Compound Substance made of atoms of different elements bonded together in a certain ratio.
Ion Atom that has gained or lost one or more electrons.
Ionic Bond Forms the through the electrical force between oppositely charged ions.
Covalent Bond Forms when atoms share a pair of electrons.
Molecule Two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds.
Hydrogen Bond Attraction between a slightly positive hydrogen atom and a slightly negative atom.
Cohesion Attraction among molecules of a substance.
Adhesion Attraction among different types of substances.
Solution Mixture of substances that is the same through-out it is a homogenous mixture.
Solvent Substance that is present in the greater amount and that dissolves in a solvent.
Solute A substance that is dissolved in a solvent.
Acid A compound which releases a proton.
Base Compounds that release H+ concentration.
pH A solutions acididy.
Monomer Subunit in the complete molecule.
Polymer Large molecule.
Carbohydrate Composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.
Lipid Nonpolar molecules.

Amino Acid
Nucleic Acid
