4.1 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Heredity The passing of physical characteristics from parents to offspring.
Trait Each different form of characteristic, such as stem height or seed color.
Genetics The scientific study of heredity.
Fertilization A new organism begins to form when a egg and sperm join in the process.
Purebred Organism is the offspring of many generations that have the same trait.
Gene The factors that control the traits.
Alleles The different forms of gene.(letters)
Dominant Allele One whose trait always shows up in the organism when the allele is present.
Recessive Allele One trait that always hide when ever the dominant allele is present.
Hybrid Organism that has two different alleles for a trait.
