| heredity | The passing of physical characteristics from parent to offspring. |
| trait | A characteristic that an organism can pass on to it's offspring through its genes. |
| genetics | The scientific study of heredity. |
| fertilization | When a plant egg and sperm join. |
| purebred | Offspring of many generations that have the same traits. |
| gene | Factor that control a trait. |
| alleles | Different forms of a gene. |
| dominate allele | one whose trait always shows up in the organism when the allele is present. |
| recessive allele | Trait that is hidden whenever the dominant allele is present. |
| hybrid | Organism that has two different alleles for a trait |
| probability | To predict the result of a particular event. |
| Punnett Squares | A chart that shows all the possible combinations of alleles that can result from a genetic cross. |
| phenotype | Physical appearance. |
| genotype | A genetic makeup, or allele combinations. |
| homozygous | Organism that has two identical alleles for a trait. |
| heterozygous | Organism that has two different alleles for a trait. |
| codominance | Inheritance pattern |
| Meiosis | Process by which the number of chromosomes is reduced by half to form sex cells sperm and eggs. |
| Messenger RNA | copies the coded message from the DNA in the nucleus, and carries the message to the ribosomes in the cytoplasm |
| Transfer RNA | Carries the amino acids to the ribosome and adds them to the growing protein |
| Mutation | Any change in the gene or chromosomes. |
