TermDefinition
heredity The passing of physical characteristics from parent to offspring.
trait A characteristic of an organism that it gets from it's parents.
genetics The scientific study of heredity.
fertilization The beginning of an organisms formation.
purebred The offspring of many generations with the same trait.
gene The factor that controls a trait.
alleles The different forms of a gene.
dominant allele An allele whose trait is always showing when it is present.
recessive allele A trait that is hidden when the dominant one is present.
hybrid An organism with two different alleles for the same trait.
probability A number that shows the likely-hood of something.
Punnet square A chart that shows all the possible combinations of alleles of a cross.
phenotype An organisms appearance.
genotype An organisms genetic makeup
homozygous An organism with two identical alleles for a trait.
heterozygous An organism with two different alleles for a trait.
codominance An organism that has alleles that are neither dominant or recessive so are both shown
meiosis The process through which some cells chromosomes are halved to create sex cells.
messenger RNA Copies the coded message from the nucleus and carries it to the ribosome.
transfer RNA Carries amino acids to the ribosome and adds them to growing proteins.
mutation Any change in a gene or chromosome.
