heredity Is the passing of physical characteristics from parents to offspring .
Trait A characteristic height or seed color .
Genetics The scientific study of heredity .
Fertilization A new organism that forms when the egg and sperm join in the process .
Purebred A organism that is offspring of many generations that have the same trait .
Gene Use for the factors that control a trait .
Alleles Inherits from its parents .
Dominant Allele is one whose trait always shows up in the organism when alleles is present .
Recessive Allele A trait that's controlled by a recessive allele will only show up if the organism does not have the dominant allele .
Hybrid A organism that has two different alleles for for a trait .
Probability Is a number that describes how likely it is that an event will occur .
Punnettsquare Is a chart that shows all the possible combinations of alleles that can result from a genetic cross .
Phenotype A phenotype is its physical appearance , or visible traits .
Genotype A genotype is its genetic makeup , or allele combinations .
Homozygous A smooth pod plant that has the alleles SS and a pinched-pod plant with the alleles ss are both homozygous
Heterozygous A smooth -pod plant with the alleles Ss is heterozygous .
Codominance The alleles are neither dominant not recessive .
Meiosis I the process by which the number of chromosomes is reduced by half to form sex cells -- sperm and eggs .
Messenger RNA Copies the coded message from the DNA in the nucleus , and carries the message to the ribosome in the cytoplasm .
Transfer RNA Carries amino acids to the ribosome and adds them to the growing protein .
Mutation Is any change in an gene or chromosome .
