Unit 3 Cells
Terms related to cells and characteristics of living things
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Unicellular | A living thing made of only one cell. |
| Multicellular | A living thing made of many cells. |
| Organelle | A tiny structure inside a cell that carries out a specific function. |
| Nucleus (cell) | The control center of a cell; contains DNA; determines cell characteristics. |
| OrganicCompound | A chemical compound that contains carbon atoms; may also contain hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen. |
| Mitochondrion | Organelles that release energy for use by the cell through the process of cellular respiration. |
| Ribosome | An organelle made of RNA that puts together chains of amino acids to build proteins. |
| EndoplasmicReticulum | A system of membranes near the nucleus that assists in the production and transport of proteins and lipids. Rough ER has ribosomes attached to the surface. |
| GolgiComplex | An organelle that packages material to be transported out of the cell. |
| CellWall | A rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane of plant cells and prokaryotes to provide structure and support. |
| Vacuole | A fluid filled sac inside cells used to store nutrients, water or waste. Plant cells have a large central vacuole full of water that provides support. Plants wilt when the central vacuole loses water (turgor pressure). |
| Chloroplast | The organelle in plant cells where photosynthesis occurs. They contain the chemical chlorophyll that makes them appear green. |
| CellMembrane | A protective barrier that surrounds the cell and controls which materials can enter and leave the cell. |
| Chromosome | Threadlike structures inside the nucleus that are made of DNA. These structures contain the genetic instructions for an organisms traits. |
| Cytoplasm | The gel-like liquid that fills a cell; 80% water. |
