| enzyme | A protein that is capable of speeding up a chemical reaction. |
| mechanical digestion | The tearing, mixing, and grinding of the teeth. |
| saliva | Watery substance that secreted by three pairs of glands around the mouth. Helps moisten and soften food for swallowing. |
| sphincter | A ring of muscles that aids in the one way passage of food through the digestive tract. |
| trachea | The pipe to the lungs. |
| bolus | Moist ball of food in back of mouth. |
| epiglottis | The flap over the trachea that prevents food from going into the lungs. |
