Lesson 4 Vocab Mrs. Byers 4th Period

TermDefinition
amalase A digestive enzyme that breaks down starch.
chemical digestion Start of enzyme activity.
enzyme A protein that is capable of speeding up a chemical reaction.
mechanical digestion The tearing, mixing, and grinding of the teeth.
saliva Watery substance that secreted by three pairs of glands around the mouth. Helps moisten and soften food for swallowing.
sphincter A ring of muscles that aids in the one way passage of food through the digestive tract.
trachea The pipe to the lungs.
bolus Moist ball of food in back of mouth.
epiglottis The flap over the trachea that prevents food from going into the lungs.
