| Inferences | Process of making logical conclusions |
| Scientific methods | Methods biologists use to gather information and to answer questions |
| Hypothesis | A testable explanation of a situation |
| Serendipity | The occurrence of accidental or unexpected but fortunate results |
| Experiment | Investigation of a phenomenon in a controlled setting to test a hypothesis |
| Control group | In an experiment is a group used for comparison |
| Experimental group | The group exposed to the factor being tested |
| Independent variable | The one factor that can change in a controlled experiment |
| Dependent variable | It results from or depends on changes to the independent variable |
| Constant | A factor that remains fixed during an experiment while independent variable and dependent variable change |
| Data | Information gained from observations |
