Biology Vocabulary Chapter 1 Section 1.3

TermDefinition
Observation A direct method of gathering information in an orderly way
Inferences Process of making logical conclusions
Scientific methods Methods biologists use to gather information and to answer questions
Hypothesis A testable explanation of a situation
Serendipity The occurrence of accidental or unexpected but fortunate results
Experiment Investigation of a phenomenon in a controlled setting to test a hypothesis
Control group In an experiment is a group used for comparison
Experimental group The group exposed to the factor being tested
Independent variable The one factor that can change in a controlled experiment
Dependent variable It results from or depends on changes to the independent variable
Constant A factor that remains fixed during an experiment while independent variable and dependent variable change
