Biology Vocabulary Chapter 1 Section 1.1

TermDefinition
Adaptation Any inherited characteristic that results from changes to a species over time
Biology The science of life
Development The process of natural changes that take place during the life of an organism
Growth Results in the addition of mass to an organism and, in many organisms, the formation of new cells and new structures
Homeostasis Regulation of an organisms internal conditions to maintain life
Organism Anything that has or once had all these characteristics
Organization Arranged in an orderly way
Reproduction The production of offspring
Response Reaction to a stimulus
Species A group of organisms that can breed with one another and produce fertile offspring
Stimulus Anything that is part of either environment and causes some sort of reaction by the organism
