Biology Chapter 1

QuestionAnswer
how does biodiversity change around the world? the warmer the place the more living things there are
what characteristics do living things share? all made of one or more cells, needs energy for metabolism, responds to its environment, has DNA it can that it can pass off to its offspring
how do we organize living things? put them in systems based on functions
how do we use systems to describe life? all organisms have/use systems in their life
how does form fit function? example: the kind of teeth show what kinds of functions it performs
what purpose does homeostasis serve? it maintains constant internal conditions in an organism which is needed to survive
how does evolution change how we view the living world? Evolution as helped us understand how different and similar organisms can be.
what does adaptation have to do with form fitting function? Adaptations are changes in structure that convey functions.
how is biology conducted? you have cells that make up systems that make up organisms
what types of experiments can be done in biology? experimental and observational
how do we generalize and publicize our findings? we publish them in peer reviewed journals
what kinds of technology assist in the study of biology? computer models and imaging
how do LM differ from SEM and TEM? In a light microscope you can see objects that are not extremely small but SEM and TEM can help you see extremely small objects. (LM is easiest to use)
how do we use technology in medicine? to create medicines, to diagnose diseases
what purpose do computers serve? Computers can generate computer images/models during an experiment when it isn't safe practical or ethical.
what is molecular genetics and why is it valuable? the study of the small parts of DNA and it has helped us learn about genes
how does your knowledge of biology benefit your health and that of the world? it could help us cure cancer
what solutions does biotech present? vaccines, modified plants so that they produce in certain conditions
what problems does it imply? with genetically modified plants we don’t know if there is something in the plant that could harm people
what new questions does biotechnology generate? a question is solved but scientists are always looking for new ways to make it better

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
